Excursion to Vienna
On 26 June 2026, as part of the practical module of the “Introduction to African Studies” module series, we went on an excursion to Vienna.
Our stops in Vienna included:
- the World Museum, with a guided tour on the topic “Given, Traded, Bought, Stolen”
- a city walk with journalist/curator/historian Vanessa Spanbauer titled “Pioneering Black Resistance in Vienna”
The excursion offered students and module participants the opportunity to deepen the knowledge of restitution and provenance research that they had acquired in the introductory session on 12 June with our guest speakers Samson Ogiamien and Bernadette Biedermann, and to broaden it through additional perspectives.

Online Roundtable with Zambian Writers and Researchers from the University of Zambia (UNZA)
On 24 April 2026 – as one of the highlights of this summer semester – we concluded Module 6 of the African Studies Module Series (African Languages in Context: Local and Translocal Voices in Literature and Film) with a lively online roundtable featuring Zambian writers and colleagues from the University of Zambia.
Many thanks to Memory H. Chanda, Sumili Kipenda, Dr Gankhanani Moffat Moyo, Ingrid Nayame, Fiske S. Nyirongo, Richard Sakala, and Anna Zgambo for sharing their perspectives and profound knowledge of the Zambian literary landscape.
Workshop of the Network for African Studies
On September 18 and 19 2025, the 8th Workshop of the Network for African Studies in Austria was held at the University of Graz (at the University Centre Wall and treffpunkt sprachen – Centre for Language, Plurilingualism and Didactics).
The conference brought together researchers from a great variety of disciplines who presented their projects and initiatives, showcasing the diversity of African Studies in Austria.
Networking and dialogue were in the centre and a key activity included a plenary discussion on the future of the African Studies Network as well as the development of research collaborations with African universities.
The conference was organized by Angelika Heiling, Jennifer Brunner, and Katharina Oke (African Science Hub/University of Graz).
