Workshop of the Network for African Studies

On September 18 and 19, the 8th Workshop of the Network for African Studies in Austria was held at the University of Graz (at the University Centre Wall and treffpunkt sprachen – Centre for Language, Plurilingualism and Didactics).

The conference brought together researchers from a great variety of disciplines who presented their projects and initiatives, showcasing the diversity of African Studies in Austria.

Networking and dialogue were in the centre and a key activity included a plenary discussion on the future of the African Studies Network as well as the development of research collaborations with African universities.

The conference was organised by Angelika Heiling, Jennifer Brunner, and Katharina Oke (African Science Hub/University of Graz).

Excursion to Vienna

On 13 June 2025, as part of the practical module within the “Introduction to African Studies” module series, we went on an excursion to Vienna.

In addition to our students and module participants, our guest lecturer, Graz-based artist and restitution expert Samson Ogiamien, as well as two visiting scholars at the treffpunkt sprachen centre joined the excursion.

Our stops in Vienna included:

  • Radio Orange, where journalist, media critic and anti-racism expert Simon Inou gave us a warm welcome and an engaging guided tour;
  • the Afrieurotext bookshop and association, where we had the opportunity to browse the books and enter into conversation;
  • the Weltmuseum, which we visited as part of a guided tour, enriched by additional perspectives from  Samson Ogiamien.

Many thanks for the numerous inspiring and informative conversations!
